PowerPoint vs. Google Slides – which is better for company presentations?

Table of contents

PowerPoint or Google Slides? It’s one of the first questions I hear from companies ordering a presentation or template. In 2026, the differences between these tools look different than they did a few years ago. Both allow real-time teamwork and both have built-in AI. So today, the choice mainly depends on which ecosystem your company works in and how much control over the design matters to you.

Below is a PowerPoint vs Google Slides comparison from the perspective of a designer who creates company presentations in both tools every day.

PowerPoint – full control over how your presentation looks

PowerPoint is still the standard in large companies, banks, law firms and sales teams. Its biggest advantage is control over every element on the slide.

Advantages of PowerPoint

  • Advanced slide master. You can create dozens of layouts with placeholders. This lets the team build new slides without breaking the design.
  • Brand fonts and colors. The presentation uses fonts from your brand book, and the color palette is saved in the theme.
  • Advanced animations. Morph transitions, motion paths and precise control over the order of effects.
  • Real-time collaboration. If the file is stored in OneDrive or SharePoint, several people can edit it at the same time.
  • Offline work in the Windows and macOS apps.

Disadvantages of PowerPoint

  • Cost. You need a Microsoft 365 license, and full Copilot features require an additional license.
  • Heavy files. Large images and videos quickly bloat a presentation. Fortunately, this can be managed – I describe how in my article how to reduce the size of a PowerPoint presentation.
  • Versioning. When files are passed around by email instead of living in the cloud, you easily end up with several “final” versions.

Google Slides – fast teamwork in the browser

Google Slides is the choice of companies that work in Google Workspace: startups, agencies and distributed teams. The presentation runs in the browser, and all you need to collaborate is a link.

Advantages of Google Slides

  • Frictionless collaboration. Many people can edit at once, with comments and version history at hand.
  • No installation. All you need is a browser, and files are saved automatically to Google Drive.
  • Google Workspace integration. Charts from Google Sheets update in the presentation.
  • Low barrier to entry. Google Slides is free with a personal account.

Disadvantages of Google Slides

  • Limited fonts. You can’t upload your own brand fonts. You choose from the Google Fonts library, so you often need to find a substitute.
  • Simpler master. The theme editor offers fewer options than the PowerPoint slide master.
  • Basic animations and fewer tools for working with graphics.
  • Import issues. When you open a PPTX file, some effects and fonts may change, and very large files may not open at all.

AI in presentations: Copilot and Gemini

In 2026, both tools can generate a presentation from a single prompt. Copilot in PowerPoint creates and edits slides in a conversation and, in companies, can use the corporate brand kit. Gemini in Google Slides generates an editable presentation of a few slides and can base it on files from Google Drive.

AI works well for a first draft and for organizing content. However, a consistent design, a clear hierarchy and polished charts still require a designer’s work. I write more about this in my article how to use AI to create a company presentation.

When to choose PowerPoint and when Google Slides?

Choose PowerPoint if:

  • your company works on Microsoft 365,
  • the presentation must use the font from your brand book,
  • you are preparing a sales, investor or board presentation with an elaborate design,
  • you need a company template that many people will use.

Choose Google Slides if:

  • your team works in Google Workspace and often edits presentations together,
  • the presentation is updated frequently, e.g. a monthly report or an offer,
  • speed and easy link sharing matter more than visual effects.

The most common mistake: choosing the tool last

Choose the software before the design, not after. Converting a finished presentation between PowerPoint and Google Slides usually breaks fonts, spacing and animations. As a result, every slide has to be fixed by hand. That is why, when I am asked for a template, I always ask which program the team will use day to day.

Summary

In the PowerPoint vs Google Slides comparison, there is no single winner. PowerPoint gives you more control over the design and works better for presentations that need to look perfect. Google Slides wins on simplicity and in-browser collaboration. Most importantly, choose the tool your team actually works in.

I design company presentations and templates in both programs – fully editable and tailored to your brand. Write to me, and I’ll advise you on which tool will work better for your company.
